Description

WQHD Monitor Asus PB278Q Review

Features:

27-inch monitors were supposed to be quite an expensive solution several months ago, but today they are becoming more affordable due to the switch to LED technology. To say more, the army of displays with WQHD resolution (2560x1440) has grown from a few rare models to a line of products designed by a series of vendors. Asus joined this army with the introduction of monitor PB278Q. Its launch aroused great interest from the part of Asus devotees, as well as of all 'WQHD-targeted' customers.

Background Information

MonitorPB278Q is the first 27-inch model with WQHD resolution designed by Asus. It employs PLS+W-LED panel type manufactured by Samsung (LTM270DL02) and is a true 8-bit solution for home-based and corporate spheres. The array response time, measured at GtG methodology, is recorded at 5 ms mark. Viewing angles in both flats (vertical and horizontal) equal to 178 degrees; this is a typical figure for such type of displays. The maximal display brightness achieves 300 nits, while its static contrast is fixed at 1000:1 and dynamic contrast – at 80 million to 1.

The monitor accommodates analog D-Sub port that supports 1920x1080 resolution, and a set of digital video ports, including HDMI, DVI-D, and DisplayPort. The maximal claimed resolution of 2560x1440 might be achieved via HDMI connection type. It should be mentioned that the manufacturer did not stipulate the availability of USB ports in its new model.

Among otherthings, PB278Q houses two types of audio sockets: input and output. The first is applied on D-Sub and DVI-D connection, and the other one is employed for the connection of headphones, or stereo system. Besides, the display is furnished with a couple of speakers (3W each).

Thenominal delivery set of Asus PB278Q consists of CD with all necessary drivers and user guidelines, Quick Start Guide, audio cable for the connection of monitor to the audio card, power cable, and a set of videocables (DisplayPort, DVI-D, D-Sub, HDMI 1.4).

Integration

Asusdevelopers tried to stick to its Pro Art series in design part. Thus, PB278Q features a strict, monotonous display design with minced edges; casing, stand and base are made of plastic and metal which add some pounds to the overall weight of the model. The monitor is delivered in adisassembled way with a detached base and a fixed stand. It is also possible to use it as a wall display by detaching the central stand and applying VESA bracket. The stand allows the customer to change the display locations in all available positions, including angle of gradient, side rotation, height, and portrait mode.

Theimplementation of a dedicated plastic plank on the central stand is called to provide for the efficient cable management and hide all connected wires between two notches. The display alignment is practically ideal; this saves the casing from slacking and wiggling.

Menu and Control

MonitorAsus PB278Q is controlled with the help of six physical keys and Power button which are located on the lower plate. The frontal plate accommodates special indicators that designate the functional of each key. The user is able to employ a few fast-access options for the switchof Splendid mode, volume control, brightness and contrast change, as well as video signal adaption.

The main menu consists of several essential section: System Setup, Splendid, Color, Image, Sound, and Input Select.

1. System Setup section gives access to OSD settings. The user is able to setup the working language, the transparency level, the time till the main menu disappears from the display, the disabling of DDC/CI interface, the disabling of power indicator, settings clearance, etc.
2. Splendid section allows choosing one of the pre-installed display modes and clearing each of them separately.
3. Color section provides for adjusting of display brightness, saturation, contrast, tints, color temperature, and gamma. Advanced settings open the access to a more sophisticated tuning (offset, gain).
4. Image section facilitates the setup of Trace Free, sharpness range, Position, Auto Adjust, and of some other options.
5. Sound section traditionally offers the settings pertained to the sound source and volume adjustment.
6. Input Select section is dedicated specifically to the selection of a necessary video signal source.
